Interfolk

Institute for liberal education and voluntary associations * research, dialogue and development

Values and conceptual basis

The conceptual basis of Interfolk is based on the humanistic traditions of liberal education and personal formation from the Nordic region as well as the rest of Europe – where the main emphasis is on freedom of mind, personal autonomy, a living democracy, cultural cohesion and social justice.

The aim is to contribute to a renewed dialogue and common activities between partners from the Nordic liberal adult education (characterised by the Grundtvigian ideas) and the broader European tradition of liberal adult education – especially with a focus on

·        the traditions of existential enlightenment in the liberal education and the aesthetically and global humanistic traditions of the art based voluntary associations

·       the traditions of democratic engagement in the non-formal education and the social and political engagement in the NGO-organisations.

Immanuel Kant

'Enlightenment is man's release from his self -incurred tutelage. Tutelage is man's inability to make use of his understanding without direction from another. (.). Sapere aude! 'Have courage to use your own reason!'- that is the motto of enlightenment.'

 An Answer to the Question:

'What is Enlightenment?”,
